When the Wind Stops

A Beautiful book about the continuing nature of life . . .
I found this to be a beautifully written & illustrated book about the renewal of each day. The story begins with a little boy sad to see the day end and his mother explaining to him that the day ends so night can begin. . . The prose is soothing and imaginative . . . the message is about how they day can end for you, but it begins again in another place for someone else. . . it seems to me to be a gentle way of talking about letting go. . . letting go of the day, of the season, of the wind, of things, so that these things can carry on in a different way. I think it is a great way for a child to begin to understand about the finite nature of life. Also, is addresses the immediate and strong feeling of my toddler of NO NIGHT NIGHTS!!! The prose is so soothing and imaginative it actually lulled my child to sleep. The illustrations are colorful and beautiful. An EXCELLENT book.

A Story That Clears the Fog on Difficult Concepts
In easy language with good illustrations, this book will help children to understand why the day has to end, where the wind goes when it stops, where the waves go when they break on the sand, where does the rain go, etc.

The story flows like a poem, yet offers insight into complex concpets, and demonstrates life's eternal evolution and motion.

Inspiring story of the circle of life!
This is a soothing, inspiring book that illustrates the truth and meaning of the eternal circle of life. It is a comfort book, and a spiritual revelation. A must for Pagan parents, and all parents. The illustrations are deep and beautiful.

Windfall

In desperation Gillian and her brother Nicholas ran away, only to get lost in the freezing snow. But Gillian and Nick weren't the only ones out in the snow that night - a man, wronged by the same King, was dying of cold nearby.

Hearing his cry for help, Gillian and Nick investigate, and in doing so find their own salvation - a house which would shelter them from the snow; and an exiled Prince from Gillian's past.

Even after reaching the safety of the house, the two young adults were not out of the woods. Rolf de Vinnes was on their trail, Determined to find his wayward fiancee. Having lusting after Gillian for many years he is willing to go to any lengths to recover her.

Can a Prince-in-exile, a young woman and her brother overcome the forces that a King's favoured companion could muster?

Their predicament sets in motion a train of events that would leave a kingdom reeling. Helped by priests, pirates and princes the trio just might survive. And if they do - the betrayals and treachery that they discover could destroy powerful political alliances. It will also set in motion an unstopable train of events that started two generations ago.

For the sake of one man's lust, a kingdom might topple...

Outstanding, a definate must read
Absolutely Fantastic! If you haven't read this book yet, I strongly recommend you grab it and do so. Be careful though, once you open it and start reading, you won't be able to put it back down until you've finished. Ms. Boyett-Compo has packed this book so full that it overflows. There is fantasy, romance, danger, adventure, and mystery, this book has it all.

Lady Gillian Cree (Gilly) is a strong willed, spirited young woman. She is in love with Prince Kaelan Hesar and wants to marry him, but her father and stepmother have different plans. They have approved of her betrothal to another man, one she despises. Lord Nicholas Cree (Nick) is Gilly's older brother and he is determined to do everything he possibly can to help Gilly escape from The Keep, their home, so their father cannot force her to wed. Prince Kaelan Hesar has loved Gilly since she was a child and has paid dearly for his love. His older brother Duncan, the Jarl, has forced Kaelan to wed another and cast him out. But Kaelan's love for Gilly still burns stronger than ever and now that he is free, he is determined they will wed.

The three of them begin a dangerous journey. Running for their lives to find freedom from those that would rule them. With the help of a few friends they meet on the way, their journey crosses many lands and seas to reach their final destination.

This book is completely spellbinding, it grabs you from the first sentence and even after you've turned that final page, you still reach for another page. I am definitely hooked and can hardly wait to read WindChance to find out more.

Outstanding Prose
Charlotte Boyette-Compo's book grips you at page one, pulls you in, and doesn't let you go. If you want a book that will keep you turning the pages, right up to the conclusion--then look no further. WindFall is an outstanding read.

Highly Recommended by this reader!

Timeless Tales 4.5 star review
By TT reviewer Susan Tam
Windweeper is book three from the WindLegends Saga. The book opens with Conar and Liza trying to get back on track as a couple. In the previous book, Conar sent Liza back to her parents but he has come to reclaim his wife. However, her family has taken exception to her treatment at Conar's hands and they are set on keeping her safe. They refuse to let her return with him to Serenia until he proves he has conquered his problems. Conar seems to have control over his anger, jealousy and his drinking problem. Liza remains steadfast in her love and belief in him. Finally, Liza is allowed to return with her husband back to Serenia. However, the shadows of Kaileel Tohre and the Brotherhood of the Domination are not far behind. Kaileel has not taken Conar's rejection well. He is hell bent on destroying Conar and all that he holds dear -- his wife, children, family and friends.

Of the three books in this series I have read, I've enjoyed this one the most. It was the most balanced in terms of story and character development. The violence was not overdone compared to the previous book. I experienced great joy and great sorrow and practically all the emotions in between. I enjoyed learning more about the secondary characters especially Legion, Brelan and even Galen. You learn more about Kaileel and Conar's relationship. This book takes you beyond Conar and Liza's relationship.

In order to understand the motivations, characterizations and storyline, I highly recommend you read the books in order. You can see the growth and maturation of the characters over these three books. I look forward to reading book four of this series when it is published.

Highly Highly Recomended
Here is a story that will take you to the seat of your chair to find out what will happen next. A story of two souls that must conquer a dark evil. They go through obstical after obstical and their love grows stronger. When you finish this book you will be looking for the next book. Here is another book that you will not be able to put down. Again Charlott Boyett-Compo has outdone herself. I highly recomend this book.

Very highly recommended
In the third novel in the nine-book series of Sword & Sorcery, author Charlotte Boyett-Compo once again keeps holds the reader rapt until the last page turns. Picking up where book two leaves off, Conar and Liza McGregor struggle against the winds of fate, victim of storms beyond their imagining.

At last reunited, Conar and Liza plan to return to his father's kingdom Serenia. Confronting the demon Raphian in the book's prologue, Conar learns to unit his gifts with Liza to defeat the Storm God. Little do they realize that with the battle won, they've yet to win the war against the evil god and those who serve him, The Brothers of the Dominion led by Kaileel Tohre. Or the depths of evil Tohre will sink to in order take revenge for being scorned by Conar.

Nightmares taunt him, bringing visions of Liza with Conar's half-brother, Brelan Saur. He hears Tohre's vicious gloating, promises of Tohre depriving Conar of his lady forever. The dreams prove to be a retched prophecy as Conar falls victim to great evil. His drink spiked with tensure by his own Elite guard, Conar again looses his temper. Liza's mother, the queen, refuses to allow Conar to take Liza home, fearing for her safety, both from Conar and from Tohre.

Liza is determined to stand beside Conar so they may defeat Tohre and his followers together. She believes they are destined to be together. She is the Keeper of the Wind; he is the Prince of the Wind. Sadly, Liza underestimates the events already set into motion, and the reach and evil of the Dominion. Death and change will sweep aside all that she loves and all that she believes in.

As Tohre's power grows, his perversity and evil threaten to destroy the kingdom. Tohre destroying Conar and weakens the power of the King as Galen, Conar vile twin, steps in to rule the kingdom. But that is only the beginning of Tohre's plans. Over taxation, repossessing the homes and belongings of those unable to pay, destroying the spirit of the people, and the surrounding kingdoms, all build the power of the Dominion. For the first time, their goal to bring mankind into submission to their power, begins to become a real possibility.

Boyett-Compo allows the Windlegend series to grow beyond a simple fantasy series, with a fascinating and reverting love story, into a saga of the fight between good and evil. The evolving mythology, on which the novel rests, continues to become even more complex and mesmerizing with each book of the series. Further, the story of Conar's destruction had me reading until three in the morning, tears streaming down my face. I could hardly keep going, the novel touched me so deeply, yet I couldn't put the thing down. The pain and the challenges faced by these extraordinary characters held me enthralled. If you like Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series, then you're going to love Charlotte Boyett-Compo's Windlegends. Very highly recommened.

Acts of Kindness

Profoundly affecting
This tale of the unlikely friendship between a voiceless, pregnant young woman and the deeply unhappy wealthy wife of an alarmingly abusive charmer is deeply touching in its exploration of how the bonds of a friendship get formed. Like the other reviewer, I, too, love this book. It has tremendous tension and great warmth. It also is an intriguing investigation of the insidious effects of domestic abuse. I once saw this book listed among the titles in a gay bookstore and found it interesting that the affection shown by the two women was interpreted as the foundation of a gay relationship. In reality, it's about the need of women for intimate friends and for warmth; it's not about a sexual relationship. The one scene that was clearly misinterpreted had to do with Del (who cannot have children) drawn to Gene's lushness in pregnancy because it represents everything Del can never have. This is a fine book, written with sensitivity and great understanding of the human condition.

Beautifully written, about the friendship between 2 women.
Gene is a woman who makes her living doing voiceovers, she is injuried during a studio accident. She rents a home from the second women in this story, seeking a quiet place to have her baby. A gentle, well written story, that takes many twists. I love this book and have read it at least 20 times.

American Mosaic: The Immigrant Experience in the Words of Those Who Lived It (Pitt Series in Social and Labor History)
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Pittsburgh Pr (Txt) (May, 1993)
Authors: Joan Morrison, Charlotte Fox Zabuskey, and Charlotte F. Zabusky
Average review score:

A priceless compilation of History for ANY reader
Morrison and Zabusky have outdone themselves by gathering stories in immigrants own words and compiling them in this delightful book. It has been a long time since I've read any nonfiction, but because of this book and how well it captivated me, nonfiction is what I crave most. The stories are so detailed and I can honestly say that at times I actually felt the story-tellers pain. This should be required reading for all high school students. I am so glad I stumbled on to this gem!

Bite-sized stories in the style of Studs Terkel
This is a great resource and a priceless record of the immigrant experience in America. Morrison and Zabusky collected stories in people's own words and sets them down here, so we can all see first-hand just how the USA came to be such a melting pot. Stories of hardship and pride leap off the page. A terrific book to wave in the face of people who don't seem to remember that we were all immigrants at one point or another

The Beagle

I LOVE BEAGLES
As the owner of a beagle, I naturally loved this book. I enjoyed the photographs of the beautiful hounds and I felt this book did a good job of reaching a younger audience. The author clearly loves this winsome little hound and to her credit, treats beagles and beagle owners with respect. I think this is a nice intro book for anyone seriously interested in owning a beagle.

Cool book for kids
Well edited, nice photos. Kids who enjoy learning about animals should enjoy this book.

Benigna Machiavelli
Published in Paperback by Such & Such Publishing (March, 1998)
Authors: Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Charlotte Perkins, and Joan Blake
Average review score:

To hell with dusty "women's studies collections."
WHAT!? "Appropriate for academic and women's studies collections" sounds like the kiss of death for a literary work, and that should not happen to Benigna Machiavelli. This utterly delightful work was passed to me by a (male) friend and, well, ok, I confess it sat on my shelf for months while I continued with my usual fare of crime, warfare, and science fiction. Then one day it was raining too hard to go out and I ran out of books. This is something I usually take great care to prevent as I love a good yarn when I have the time, usually a good "feisty" yarn. In desperation I picked Benigna up and started to read . . . and was hooked. Ms. Gilman clearly understands and delights in the human situation. She describes a young girl facing and solving the problems of her day with wit and humor that goes way beyond her gender. So I say, "To hell with dusty "women's studies collections." This is a great read for anyone with even a smidgeon of interest in the workings of the human mind, and it is an especially great read for any man interested in women.

Brilliant, delightful, funny
This work by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is the fictional memoir of a girl grown to womanhood on her own terms. At an early age she decides to become a "good villian" and use her considerable intellect and common sense to make her own life, and the lives of those around her, better. The heroine of the story tackles everything, from obtaining supplies for her school, saving her sister from a would-be seducer, and rescuing the family from their own abusive father, to running her own boarding house, matchmaking for her sister, and helping her mother heal and grow. She succeeds, with wit and style. And Charlotte Perkins Gilman succeeds in creating a highly readable work that both teaches and heals the reader by portraying a better way of life, without preaching.
